EastEnders fans believe they've sussed out why Vicki Fowler and her beau Ross Marshall are so in need of cash.
During the April 1 episode on BBC iPlayer, the BBC soap let slip the true reason for Vicki coming back to Albert Square after two decades away.
Last spotted heading to Oz with Spencer Moon (Chris Parker) in 2004, she's now returned for her uncle Martin Fowler Fowler's funeral along with her new clan.
Eyebrows were raised about missing Spencer as Vicki showed off her latest flame Ross (Alex Walkinshaw) and his lad Joel (Max Murray).
The story first had it that Spencer was unfaithful, but lo and behold, it turns out Vicki was the one who wrecked their happy ending, having a fling with Spencer's mate Ross, reports Plymouth Live.
This bombshell was too much to digest for her sibling Sharon Watts (Letitia Dean) and Spencer's bro Alfie Moon (Shane Richie). As the plot thickened, we learn that Vicki and Ross didn’t just pop back for nostalgic reasons – they’ve got debts up to their eyeballs.
A fractures chat spilled the beans that they’re skint, with Ross egging on Vicki to touch Sharon for some cash – but what’s behind their financial pickle, and might there be more to their tale?
Fans have been quick to theorise online, with one writing: "Maybe someone is after them or they owe someone money? I wonder if it has some link to Spencer!" Another chimed in saying: "They're obvs after money! ! ! Defo owe someone."
A viewer commented: "A great episode of #EastEnders tonight. A brilliant opening episode for Vicki Fowler with plenty of secrets festering already? That Duff Duff -- What do Ross and Vicki need money for?".
Next week's EastEnders spoilers reveal that Ross is set to go to great lengths to keep Vicki in Walford.
The plot thickens as Sharon becomes suspicious, confronting Vicki about the financial enigma, escalating tensions between the sisters.
In a twist, Ross receives a crucial phone call, oblivious to the fact that Vicki has booked them flights back across the globe.
Despite his efforts, Ross can't persuade Vicki to stay and resorts to manipulating Ian Beale (Adam Woodyatt) to try and influence her decision.
Vicki then gets a call from her distraught mother Michelle Fowler, suggesting Ross's scheme may have been successful. But the burning question remains: why is Ross so desperate for Vicki to remain in Walford?
EastEnders airs Monday to Thursday at 7.30pm on BBC One and available to stream on BBC iPlayer from 6am
