The question of journalism’s role in our democracy could not be more pressing. Donald Trump has made clear that many vulnerable communities in our own backyards will be under serious threat in his second administration. As will the independent press that serves as a vital safeguard.

As it closes out its 15th year of serving Berkeley, the Berkeleyside newsroom is hosting a special Idea Makers evening focused on local journalism. What sets Berkeleyside apart as a thriving local news source in an era when so many others are disappearing? What goes on behind the scenes? What’s at stake for communities with no local news source? What can we do collectively to protect journalists and their first-amendment rights and what efforts are being made to reverse the downward spiral of newspaper closures?

Addressing all these questions and more will frame what promises to be a lively conversation at Berkeleyside’s Idea Makers: Beyond the Headlines on Dec. 5, 6:30 p.m.-8 p.m., at BAMPFA in downtown Berkeley.

The evening will kick off with a conversation between Cityside CEO Lance Knobel and State Assemblymember Buffy Wicks where they’ll discuss legislative efforts, partnerships, and policies that support local newsrooms, as well as potential funding models for the future.

Next, Berkeleyside’s Associate Editor and City Hall reporter Nico Savidge, UC Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism professor Lisa Armstrong and San Francisco Chronicle opinion columnist Soleil Ho will explore the current state of journalism, dig into their experiences in the field, the challenges and opportunities facing local reporting, and so much more.

Join us to gain valuable insights into the ever-evolving landscape of news and media.
