Angel House, a shelter for people with disabilities, is raising funds with a benefit show at Lit Lounge in central Seoul's Itaewon on Friday.
The event will feature eight acts performing music, dance and magic. This includes the all-Korean group Wild Atlantic Way playing traditional Irish music, the old-time band Red Dawg String, as well as Hoochus, Natraum and The Hare and the Tortoise. The dance performers include the b-boy crew F-side Rockers and tapdancing duo Tap on It! As well, Mr. Shim will perform magic tricks. There will also be a lucky draw offering a variety of prizes.
The show begins at 8:30 p.m. and runs until about midnight. Early bird tickets available until Tuesday at midnight cost 20,000 won ($13.9), and after that entry costs 25,0000 won. All ticket proceeds, excluding beverage costs, will be donated to support the residents of Angel House in Goyang, Gyeonggi Province. The funds will be used to provide warm meals, essential supplies and winter heating expenses.
Angel House's founder, Jang Soon-ok, was born with spondylitis, a painful condition that causes inflammation of the vertebrae. After her father died in the Korean War, her mother left her at an orphanage. When she aged out at 17, she began an independent life, marrying and having a daughter who was born with a developmental disability.
She opened the shelter in Oct. 22, 1993, as residence for disabled people with no one to turn to. The original building had only two rooms. After a move into a larger house, it now hosts 50 residents with disabilities. The residents call her "Mother," Jang also earned the nickname "?125cm Tall Tiny Angel."
Angel House became a government organization in 2020 but still depends on charitable donations and volunteer efforts to keep its program running.
