Donald Trump has threatened to deploy troops to America’s airports as chaos escalates nationwide, with immigration agents reportedly overwhelmed and security lines stretching for hours.
In a dramatic statement posted on his Truth Social account on Wednesday, the President said he “may call up the National Guard for more help” to deal with what he described as the growing “airport’s mess.”
The warning comes as a deepening funding crisis cripples operations at major US airports, with federal agencies struggling to maintain basic services.
Security Gridlock and Unpaid Workers
The turmoil began earlier this week when immigration officers from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) were deployed to assist at airports already facing severe disruption.
Passengers across the country have reported hours-long delays at security checkpoints, as staffing shortages intensify.
At the heart of the crisis is a funding deadlock affecting the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), whose agents have missed paychecks due to stalled federal funding.
A budget package to finance the Department of Homeland Security—which oversees TSA—has already passed the House of Representatives but remains blocked in the Senate.
Political Deadlock in Washington
Under US legislative rules, Senate spending bills require 60 votes to pass, forcing bipartisan agreement. However, negotiations have stalled as lawmakers remain divided.
As the DHS shutdown entered its fifth week, Senate Majority Leader John Thune reportedly proposed a compromise deal to fund most DHS operations—excluding ICE.
The proposal, backed by Democrats and some Republicans, would have restored TSA funding and eased airport disruptions. However, Trump rejected the deal, according to reports.
The package also reportedly included provisions aligned with Democratic demands, such as restricting immigration agents from wearing masks—another sticking point in negotiations.
Easter Pressure Tactics
In a further escalation, Trump has urged lawmakers to cancel their upcoming two-week Easter recess, warning he would publicly criticize those who leave Washington without resolving the crisis.
He even suggested hosting Republican senators and their families at the White House over Easter if a deal is not reached—an offer some lawmakers have interpreted as a thinly veiled threat.

With TSA staff unpaid, ICE agents stretched beyond their usual roles, and no immediate political resolution in sight, the situation at US airports continues to deteriorate.
