A new squirrel has been discovered in Idaho and Emmy is chatting with one of the men who found it

Every week I’m interviewing exciting people from Idaho and around the world!

Dr. Bryan McLean and his collaborators from UNC Greensboro recently identified a previously unknown species of ground squirrel – and it was found right here in Idaho!

It’s called the Snake River Plains ground squirrel and when I heard about the discovery, I was interested in chatting with Dr. McLean! Here’s what I asked him:

How did you discover the new squirrel? How did you come up with the name and did you get to choose it? What’s the difference between this and other squirrels? How long did it take you to discover the squirrel? Why is the discovery such a big deal? Have you discovered any other animals or species? What do you want people to know about your discovery?
