Police went to Josephine and Rose streets around 5:31 p.m. after receiving a report of a car striking a pedestrian there, Berkeley police spokesperson Officer Byron White said in an email.
The man had been crossing Rose Street, walking south on the east side of Josephine Street, when the motorist, driving eastbound on Rose, struck him, White said.
Upsetting news. A motorist severely injured a pedestrian on Rose Street this evening. We hope this person has a full recovery. Berkeley needs to renew its focus on #VisionZero. ❤️🩹 https://t.co/50EDPVlRiC
— Walk Bike Berkeley (@WalkBikeBerk) November 15, 2024The man was taken to Highland Hospital for treatment but later died there, White said.
The driver, a 79-year-old Berkeley woman, “remained at the scene and is cooperating with the investigation,” White said. The department’s Fatal Accident Investigation Team is investigating, he said.
White said that although he could not specify the precise section of road where the man was walking, there was no marked crosswalk from one side of Rose Street to the other at the intersection.
The collision marks Berkeley’s fourth traffic fatality of 2024, White said.
The crash, and the man’s death, were first reported by The Berkeley Scanner.
