Sydney, Australia — A 15-year-old student has been taken into custody following a firearm-related incident at a high school in Rose Bay, in Sydney’s eastern suburbs.
According to NSW Police, officers from the Eastern Suburbs Police Area Command were called to the school shortly after 1:45 p.m. AEDT on Thursday following reports of a teenager in possession of a firearm.
Police allege that the 15-year-old boy discharged a pellet from a BB gun, striking another student in the back. Authorities confirmed that no injuries were reported, and the situation was quickly brought under control.
The student was arrested at the scene, and the air gun was seized by police. Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
Heightened Concerns Around School Safety
The incident has raised fresh concerns about safety in educational institutions, coming just over a week after another security scare at Campbelltown TAFE, approximately 53 kilometres south-west of Sydney’s CBD.
In that case, police were alerted to two individuals behaving suspiciously on campus shortly before 4:30 p.m. AEDT on March 10. As a precaution, the facility was placed under lockdown before police arrived.
Authorities conducted a thorough search of classrooms and buildings, but no dangerous items were found. Following inquiries, police spoke with a 16-year-old girl, and a water pistol was seized.
Ongoing Investigations
NSW Police have not yet disclosed whether charges will be laid in the Rose Bay incident. Officials are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the use of the BB gun.
The latest incident highlights the importance of vigilance and rapid response in school environments, as authorities work to ensure the safety of students and staff across the state.
