Texas, USA — A Texas judge delivered a stern message on violent youth crime after sentencing an 18-year-old to 25 years in prison for a gun-wielding robbery that terrorized a convenience store clerk.
Caden Fontenette, of Port Arthur, had pleaded guilty to aggravated robbery over a violent incident at the Bulldog Convenience Store in Nederland on October 10. The plea was entered without any sentencing agreement, leaving the final decision entirely to the court.

Violent Attack Caught on Camera
Prosecutors said the early-morning attack, captured on surveillance footage, showed Fontenette and two juveniles storming the store armed with an assault-style weapon. The group then violently assaulted the clerk, dragging and threatening him while pointing a gun at his face.
The disturbing footage played a central role during sentencing, with the court highlighting the prolonged and aggressive nature of the attack rather than a quick theft.
Judge Condemns Rising Youth Violence
Delivering her ruling on March 10, Judge Raquel West did not hold back, pointing to a shift in how courts must respond to increasingly dangerous youth crimes.
“There was a time when youthful offenders were given opportunities and probation,” she said. “But things have changed in such an incredibly dangerous way with young people doing what I just saw.”
The judge emphasized the trauma inflicted on the victim, describing the fear experienced by a worker who was simply trying to earn a living.
“I cannot imagine the fear that person had… not just robbed, but terrorized for quite some time,” she said.
Behaviour in Custody Raises Concerns
Judge West also cited Fontenette’s conduct while in custody, noting reports of fighting and assaultive behavior in jail.
“It’s difficult for me to believe you would follow the rules outside when you can’t follow them inside,” she said, referring to a pre-sentence report that assessed him as high risk for reoffending.

“You are where the rubber meets the road,” he told the judge. “You can either release him with promises, or ensure the community is safe.”
Coleman stressed that a clear message must be sent: those who use firearms to commit violence will face long prison terms.
“We’re seeing this too often. People should be able to walk in a park or shop without fear,” he said.
Sentence and Parole
Fontenette will be required to serve at least half of his 25-year sentence before becoming eligible for parole, due to the use of a deadly weapon during the crime.
