Man four times over limit punches police officer after drink driving arrest in Newry

A man who was four times over the legal limit punched a police officer after being arrested for drink-driving.

At around 11am yesterday, Monday, April 14, police in Newry received a report of a man suspected to be driving under the influence of alcohol. When tested, they say the man was found to be four times over the drink driving limit.

Police said after the man was arrested and being processed in custody, he punched an officer.

A spokesperson for the PSNI said: "Yesterday at approximately 11am we received a report of a male suspected to be driving under the influence of alcohol. Newry Local Policing Team Officers quickly attended the area and located the male who blew over four times the legal drink drive limit.

"After he was arrested and being processed in Custody, he decided to punch one of our Officers. As a result of his actions he will now face a day in Court.

"We would like to thank the members of the public who alerted us to this male which led to his arrest. Remember never ever drink and drive."
