Toby Binder documents the deep divides shaping social life in Belfast through the lives of young people born after the Good Friday Agreement.

The German photographer is one of 30 finalists hoping to win the prestigious Sony World Photographer of the Year Award in London on Wednesday. His series of images is called Divided Youth of Belfast.

For many years, Binder has been documenting what it means for young people, all of whom were born after the peace agreement was signed, to grow up under this intergenerational tension in both Protestant and Catholic neighbourhoods.

The snapper, also hoping to win the Documentary Projects category, notes ‘there is hardly any other country in Europe where a past conflict is still as present in daily life as it is in Northern Ireland.’ He said it is not only the physical barriers – the walls and fences – but also the psychological divisions in society.

Now in its 18th year, the Sony World Photography Awards competition rewards outstanding series of work both for their compelling approach to narrative and for their photographic execution.

Across this year’s competitions, more than 419,000 images from 200 -plus countries and territories were submitted to the awards.
