Finance Minister Choi Sang-mok on Thursday underscored the critical role of public institutions in tackling youth unemployment, calling for stronger efforts to create jobs for younger generations. "Jobs are a form of welfare, and addressing youth unemployment is one of the most urgent challenges facing our society," Choi said during a meeting with young job seekers. "Public sector jobs serve as a strong pillar for youth employment." His remarks come amid growing concerns over a sharp decline in employment among younger age groups in recent months. According to government data, the number of jobs held by people in their 20s fell by 202,000 on-year in March, despite a net gain of over 200,000 jobs overall. "The government and public institutions will take the lead in offering more job opportunities and work experience to the youth," Choi said. He added that public institutions plan to hire approximately 24,000 new employees this year.
