Emmerdale's first ever character to be killed off now - 50 years after soap death

Emmerdale viewers have been left stunned after discovering that Mary Goskirk actress Louise Jameson had a role in the ITV soap over half a century ago.

The popular drama has been a mainstay on our screens since its inception in 1972, captivating audiences with its gripping narratives and unexpected plot twists.

Over the years, Emmerdale has introduced us to a host of memorable characters, from stalwarts like Kim Tate (Claire King) and Cain Dingle (Jeff Hordley), to newer additions such as Aaron Dingle (Danny Miller).

Alongside its compelling character roster, Emmerdale has also aired some shocking deaths and murders throughout its history, from Frank Tate's heart attack in 1997 to Val's tragic demise in 2015.

Interestingly, the first character to be killed off in the soap was portrayed by none other than Louise Jameson, who currently plays Mary Goskirk. Louise joined the cast as Mary in 2022 and quickly became a fan favourite, featuring in several major storylines.

Recently, she took a break from the village following the fallout from her affair with Suzy Merton (Martelle Edinborough).

However, it turns out that Louise had a part in Emmerdale 52 years prior to her current role.

She starred on the soap over 50 years ago

In 1973, she appeared in four episodes of the show, then known as Emmerdale Farm. Her character, Sharon Crossthwaite, holds the dubious honour of being the soap's first murder victim.

She was tragically raped and killed by Jim Latimer (Myles Reitherman) just three months into the show's run, reports Leicestershire Live. Sharon's lifeless form was found not long after Jim owned up to taking her life.

Following his confession, the law moved swiftly; he got nicked and subsequently banged up for Sharon's murder, receiving a lifetime stretch in the clink.

Viewers have lately been airing their astonishment upon discovering Louise's earlier gig on the soap. One gobsmacked fan took to the net, scrawling: "I never knew this happened." Another one chimed in, stating: "Great that she was reincarnated as Mary."
