Emmerdale fans only just realising Dr Crowley actor appeared in rival soap EastEnders

Emmerdale fans have been left shocked after spotting Dr Crowley star James Hillier in a classic episode of EastEnders.

As fans of the ITV soap will know, the enigmatic Dr. Crowley has been assisting devious Joe Tate (Ned Porteous) with his medical woes.

When Joe returned to the village at Christmas after a six-year absence, he hinted at a serious medical matter that was soon confirmed to be kidney failure.

While Joe knocked back painkillers to help manage his discomfort it was clear he needed help and had reeled in Dr Crowley to assist with organ harvesting.

The pair originally planned to steal Noah Dingle's (Jack Downham) kidney, but when they failed, they performed an illegal organ transplant on Caleb Miligan (William Ash).

Caleb was stabbed, and super surgeon Dr Crowley performed the kidney transplant while, of course, demanding a lot of cash.

But the police have been on the case as they work out what happened to Caleb, will Dr Crowley get away with his scheme?

Elsewhere, soap fans have been watching classic EastEnders and have pointed out that Dr Crowley actor James Hillier starred in the BBC soap 18 years ago.

Caleb is currently unaware that Joe and Dr Crowley was behind his life-threatening attack

Back in 2007, James rolled up to Albert Square as Damian, who was the fiancé of Roxy Mitchell (Rita Simons) but their romance only lasted a handful of episodes.

Taking to Reddit, one eagle-eyed fan wrote: "James Hillier (Dr Crowley) is no stranger to soapland! I was recently watching Classic EastEnders recently, and I thought "Why do I recognise his voice?". Then I put two and two together and realised it's the same actor who plays Dr. Crowley, Joe's Doctor."

They added: "James Hillier (who's been playing him) has recently been coming in and out on Classic EastEnders back in 2007 where he played Roxy's boyfriend Damian. He only appeared for 5 episodes. Anyone who has been following Classic EE on Drama Channel might not even realised it was him."

A second added: "He was Damian? Damn", while a third chimed in: "Roxy's boyfriend, not girlfriend, I assume. First pic looks like Dan Walker."

"Right around the time Moira's actress was showing up in Walford for a couple episodes as one of Max Branning's mistresses", pointed out another

Emmerdale airs weekdays at 7.30pm on ITV and ITVX
