REXBURG — Here’s an excuse to indulge in delicious cakes.

Alex Andrews, the owner of Old Souls Bakery in Rexburg, is putting on the Rexburg Cake Picnic on Saturday. It’s from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. at the Uptown Event Center at 57 East Main Street.

“I’m actually really excited,” said Andrews. “It’s just an event to get people to mingle, enjoy some food together, and get to know their neighbors and community a little bit better.”

Andrews said she drew her inspiration from a cake picnic she saw that was done in San Francisco.

“That was really huge … but I just decided to do a much smaller rural Idaho one,” she said. “I’ve had a lot of people who have actually been really wanting one out here. I have about 20 people bringing cakes, but I assume that will increase.”

Here’s how it works.

It costs $3 to enter if you are bringing a cake or $6 if you are just tasting cakes. Click here to purchase tickets online. Andrews said the money from tickets goes towards paying for the venue. She said she didn’t want to have the event outside due to unpredictable weather.

“There will just be a bunch of tables with cake. You’ll be able to go around and taste different cakes, hang out and try everything and meet people,” she said.

If people are interested in bringing a cake, it can be any kind. “Chocolate cake, upside-down cake, fruit cake, cupcake — we don’t care really. We love all cakes,” the event online says

Bakers need to bring their own serving plate, something to cut their cake with, and a label card that lists the flavor and ingredients.

“If there’s any professional bakers, you’re allowed to bring a little business card,” she said.

Andrews told EastIdahoNews.com she will be bringing a brown butter salted caramel cake and a cake with fruit in it to share.

It’s an event she invites people to come to for a sweet treat and have a fun time.
