Over half a million people in five districts continue to suffer without power due to inclement weather since November 29, the Ministry of Power and Renewable Energy said on Friday (1).
Spokesperson for the Ministry, Sulakshana Jayawardena told the Nation that power distribution to five districts including Galle, Matara, Hambantota, Kalutara and Colombo was severely affected with many parts experiencing complete blackouts for several days since Wednesday (29).
In addition, Ratnapura and Badulla too were affected by blackouts.
“Nearly one million people were affected in these districts initially. We have restored power in many areas and there are 552,000 people yet to receive power as at Friday,” Jayawardena added.
He stated that the Ministry hoped to restore power completely by Saturdday evening. “However, it depends on the weather condition. We are facing difficulties in accessing several areas. Continuous rains might delay power restoration,” he added.
Speaking further, Jayawardena said the Ministry was yet to assess the losses incurred due to the damages caused by the inclement weather, adding that they were now focusing on restoring power in affected areas. (AW)
