Opposition Leader R. Sampanthan has urged the government to encourage domestic investment and open more opportunities for Foreign Direct Investments (FDI). Speaking in Parliament at the 2018 Budget debate, Sampanthan said, “Our Doors and Windows need to be opened to massive direct foreign investment. Domestic investment should be encouraged to the maximum.” In addition, he also pointed out that expenditure on Defence continues to be a main commitment, both during the war and even several years after it had come to an end. “We have spent very heavily on fighting a War that could have been well avoided,” he said adding that all this has had a very adverse impact on the economy. Speaking further during the debate, Sampanthan also pointed out that both political parties representing the government should work together. “The people of this country want the two parties to work together,” he added.
