Railway unions called off their planned strike from midnight Friday (20) following discussions with the Government. The Railway Operations Supervisory Union (ROSU) and the Ceylon Railway Guards Union (CRGU) on October 18 threatened to launch an indefinite strike from Friday, over demands for salary increase. ROSU Convener Lal Ariyaratne speaking to the media alleged the National Salaries and Cadre Commission had not followed instructions given by Secretary to the Prime Minister, Saman Ekanayaka on increasing their salaries.
