Colombo, 16October 2017:While the region of Gampaha and its nearby constituencies were mentioned in various ancient chronicles, its well-recorded history began during the colonial era of Sri Lanka. Especially during the Dutch colonial period, the region acted as a collecting centre for cinnamon. Furthermore, with the introduction of the first rubber plant to the island which was planted at the Gampaha Botanical garden, the region received special recognition.
