The Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) is planning to meet President Maithripala Sirisena with regard to the situation concerning the Provincial Councils elections and the related law.
President of the Association, President’s Counsel Udaya Rohan De Silva said that they had met with Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe who had informed them that the Government would not be postponing the elections and that they (the Local authorities’ elections) would be held in early January next year. The franchise would therefore be safeguarded and the process of elections would not be jeopardized, he explained.
“Hurriedly passing a bill in a haphazard manner, when it should be passed according to the procedure, is not proper. We want to inform them of the correct way of placing a bill in the Parliament,” he further added.
