A few days ago, a two minute teaser of a Tamil film took the internet by storm, garnering a record 10 million views within 24 hours. Mersal, a slang that denotes astonishment, did astonish the cyber world due to its unprecedented reach on Youtube.

The technically sound teaser received laurels from India and around the world. One of those who were mesmerized by the teaser was Namal Rajapaksa who tweeted good things about the teaser.

The film has director Atlee joining hands with actor Vijay for the second time after his 2016 blockbuster Theri. The film has been widely anticipated by fans and movie buffs, not only because of the director-actor duo, but also for other elements involved.
It is speculated that Vijay would be playing three characters, including that of a magician. In fact popular magicians including Gego Requiem and Raman Sharma had trained the actor in the art of magic for this film.

The story is co-written by K.V. Vijayendra Prasad, the writer of Baahubali. The other aspect is the impressive star-studded cast that the film now boasts of. Initially, Jyothika was touted to play a role in the film, but the actress pulled out and the role eventually went to Nithya Menen. Kajal Agarwal and Samantha Ruth Prabhu are the other two heroines. Incidentally, both actresses had shared screen-space with Vijay twice in their respective careers.

Kajal appeared in Vijay’s Thuppakki and Jilla while Samantha was cast in Kaththi and Theri.

Popular comedian Vadivelu was also included in the cast which surprised many. The comedic chemistry between Vadivelu and Vijay is well known thanks to films such as Friends, Vaseegara, Madhurey, Kaavalan and many more.

However, since of late, the actor did not have any notable box office performances. Vadivelu was on a hiatus for the most part of the 2010’s and made a comeback through Thenali Raman in 2014. The film was an average grosser. He later appeared in several films including Eli, Kaththi Sandai, and Shivalinga, all of which bombed at the box office.

SJ Surya

S.J Surya is a name that cannot be ignored in Vijay’s career. It was Surya who gave Vijay a much needed hit in 2000 through his directorial, Kushi. Both of them once again joined for a film titled Puli, but the project failed to materialize.

Surya who then focused on acting, did a cameo in Vijay’s 2012 blockbuster Nanban (remake of the Hindi film – Three Idiots). Other cast members include Sathyaraj, Kovai Sarala, ‘Motta’ Rajendran, Yogi Babu and several others.

AR Rahman

This probably is the main reason the film has high expectation. Atlee chose to work with Rahman despite working with GV Prakash in his first two films. Prakash who happens to be Rahman’s nephew, has also sung a song in the album. The songs, which were released in a massive function, are all chartbusters.

Rahman had collaborated with Vijay on two previous occasions. Their first film ‘Udaya’ released in March, 2004 after being in production for six years. The film went unnoticed due to its low key release, but the songs ‘Rehenuma’, ‘Udhaya Udhaya’, and ‘Pookkum malarai’ were instant hits upon release.

Their second outing came in the form of ‘Azhagiya Tamil Magan’ (Handsome Tamil son) which was released in 2007. Despite the songs becoming a hit, the film turned out to be an average grosser.

‘Mersal’ which is their third collaboration is expected to release on October 18, 2017.
