The Committee on Public Enterprises (COPE) has taken steps to investigate irregularities that are alleged to have taken place in the construction of the Southern and Central expressways and the obtaining of new Airbus aircraft to the SriLankan Airlines.
Officials of the Ministry of Highways are scheduled to appear before the COPE on September 19 while the Board of Directors and officials of the SriLankan Airlines are scheduled to appear on September 20.

Chairman of the COPE, Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna MP Sunil Handunneththi said that the Committee had received information with regard to irregularities pertaining to the estimate and the process through which the tenders were called in relation to the two said expressways.

He added that the Committee would also inquire from the Director Board of the SriLankan Airlines about Rs 16 billion being paid as compensation and damages to a foreign company which had been contracted by the SriLankan Airlines in 2003 to provide three new Airbus planes which were ultimately not taken.
