The Electrical and Mechanical Engineering Regiment (EMER) of the Sri Lanka Army has organized the Walawa Supercross 2017 racing event for the seventh time to be held on September 17, 2017 at the Sevangala racing track in Embilipitiya.

The Walawa Supercross racing track named as the Craftsman Autodrome is situated in a scenic location in Sevanagala, Embilipitiya, 17km off Udawalawa-Thanamalwila main road close to the Udawalawa National Park.

This motor racing event was initiated by the Electrical and Mechanical Engineering Regiment of the Sri Lanka Army in 2011 for the welfare of the families of the soldiers who laid down their life, soldiers disabled in action and their families, soldiers and their families in the service of the regiment and to raise funds for the regiment’s welfare works.
This racing track was a brainchild of the then regimental head of the EMER Major General Lalith Wijetunga. This racing track was constructed by Lt. Col. Indu Samarakoon and Lt. Col. Dudminda Jaysinghe with the expertise assistance of Sanjeewa de Mel and Indika Gurusinghe under the supervision of Major General Ravi Mayadunne in a very short period.

The unique feature of this racing track is that spectators can view the whole racing events from one point. The racing track is 1,700 metres long and 30 metres wide with five bends in a slope terrain. The organizers claim that this racing track has been upgraded as the best gravel racing track in the island.

This modern racing track held the first racing and riding events in 2011 for the first time. The Sri Lanka Motorcycle Club provided the technical knowhow to this event. Many veteran racing drivers and riders took part in the event amidst large number of spectators.
Due to the indefatigable dedication of the then regimental heads, namely Maj Gen Lalith Wijetunga and Maj Gen Ravi Mayadunne, Director General of EMER Gen. Tissa Jayasuriya, Commanding Officer of the unit Brigadier Duminda Sirinaga and the officers of other ranks, the 2011 Supercross event was brought to a successful end on November 20, 2011.

The second racing event was held on June 24, 2012 having modernized and upgraded the track with better facilities for the spectators. The previous event’s experience stood in good stead to organize the event smoothly.

The third year event was held on July 7, 2013 on the Sevenagala track with 12 racing events and 13 riding events. Further, under 12 and under 10 competitions were also held. The event was started at 8.45am with the hoisting of the flags of EMER and Sri Lanka Motorcycle Club by Commanding Officer of the regiment and the president of the motorcycle club respectively.

Well known racing drivers – Upulwan Serasinghe and Ashan Silva and veteran riders – Gayan Sandaruwan and Shehan Sri Adikari participated in these events. Gayan Sandaruwan and Shehan Sri Adikari enthralled the spectators with their stunning performance.

About 30,000 enthusiastic fans witnessed the competition and they were fully satisfied with the facilities provided.

The Walawa Supercross 2014 was held on August 17, 2014 for the fourth time. It included 27 events with veteran participants vying for laurels.

The Walawa Supercross 2015 was held for the fifth time on September 13. There were 25 events with many reputed track competitors in the fray to the delight of the fans.
The sixth Supercross was held on September 11, 2016 throughout the day. Many competitors participated in the 24 events and huge number of spectators attended as usual.

The seventh edition of mega racing event is scheduled for September 17, 2017 under the supervision of present Director of the Electrical and Mechanical Engineering Regiment, Brigadier Duminda Sirinaga.12 driving events and 12 riding events are on the cards this year. Shelters and the pavilion have been refurbished for the convenience of the spectators. The organizers expect over 50,000 spectators to witness this gala event. The whole programme will be telecast live by the Channel Eye.
