The Local Government (LG) Elections Amendment Bill was passed in Parliament on Friday (25). The Bill was passed with 120 MPs voting for it.

No MPs had voted against the Bill, but 44 had abstained from voting.
The Amendment Bill was taken up following the decision by leaders of political parties on Thursday.

Meanwhile, the proposed 20th Amendment to the Constitution was defeated at the Uva Provincial Council last Thursday.

The 20th Amendment facilitates the conducting of all provincial council elections on the same day.
