A ceremony to felicitate 193 students from Jaffna who had obtained A passes in all nine subjects at the General Certificate of Education Ordinary Level examination in 2016 was held at the Security Forces Headquarters – Jaffna premises on July 29.
The Chief Guest of the felicitation ceremony held in the evening was the Governor of the Northern Province, Reginald Cooray.
Commander of the Security Forces Headquarters – Jaffna, Major General Dharshana Hettiarachchi said that the move was with the view of encouraging the said students with regard to higher education and also as part of the reconciliation process which is ongoing in the country.
The 193 students were gifted with a pack of books including stationary, a school bag and a branded Citizen wristwatch purchased from Jaffna, he added.
“There is much talk by people of the perceived need to get the Army out of these areas but the reality is that there is much being done in terms of the efforts being undertaken by the military (which are numerous) for the betterment of the people residing within the Jaffna peninsula,” he pointed out.
