Rangana Herath bagged his first wicket, that of Indian batsman Wriddhiman Saha, but the touring team kept accumulating the runs to go in for lunch at 503 for 7 on the second day of the first cricket Test here at the Galle International Cricket Stadium on Thursday.
The veteran Sri Lankan spinner Herath who is captaining the team in the absence of Dinesh Chandimal bowled as many as 31 overs before picking up a wicket after India resumed the day at 399 for 3.
When Herath struck India had made further headway at 491 for 5 and went in for the break with Ravindra Jadeja (8) and H Pandya (4) at the crease.
The only Sri Lankan bowler to enjoy the session was speedster Nuwan Pradeep Fernando who bagged his first five-wicket haul in Test cricket which came in his 24th appearance.
The other batsmen to fall in the session were Cheteshwar Pujara (153), Ajinkya Rahane (57) and Ravindran Ashwin (47).
