Elections monitoring body, People’s Action for Free and Fair Elections (PAFFREL) and the March 12th Movement, the latter advocating for clean politics, have submitted copies of the draft of a bill for election related campaign finance reforms to the Parliamentarians.
Polls monitor, PAFFREL has also requested a date from President Maithripala Sirisena, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and Minister of Provincial Councils and Local Government President’s Counsel (PC) Faiszer Musthapha to officially handover and present copies of the said draft.

Executive Director of PAFFREL, Rohana Hettiarachchi said that Musthapha PC had previously promised to present the draft of the said bill to the legislature.
Aspects pertaining to the implementation of the provisions of the bill can be developed and gazetted by the Election Commission, he noted.

“The basics are all included. The draft deals strictly with election related campaign finance and not with the financing of political parties. The latter can be dealt with as a secondary concern. We expect that the MPs including Wickremesinghe will privately and collectively support this move by taking the initiative after discussing the legal aspects of the draft of the said bill,” he further said.
