A group of over 10 MPs have thus far agreed to publicly reveal their assets and liabilities declaration statements soon.
Polls monitor, People’s Action for Free and Fair Elections (PAFFREL) explained that they would also be writing to all 225 MPs requesting them to do so by end July or early August.
Executive Director of PAFFREL, Rohana Hettiarachchi said that they were at present conducting certain consultations as to whether the MPs would have to provide the said information in a simple format or in the format they gave the said information to public authorities such as the Election Commission or the Parliament, in the case of the latter containing the bank account numbers too.
Meanwhile, polls monitors queried as to what the legal position for requiring that the Local Government authorities’ election be postponed by way of extending a gazette notification that had been issued in this regard, was. Hettiarachchi called on Minister of Provincial Councils and Local Government Attorney-at-Law Faiszer Musthapha to clarify the position of the Government in this regard.
“What is the requirement other than to merely postpone the Local Government bodies’ election? Elsewhere, we will also be distributing the draft of the campaign finance bill to the MPs,” he explained.
