Photo manipulation, considered skilful artwork involves transforming or altering a photograph using various methods and techniques.
Nipuna Kithmal Gamage is one such skilful photographer who thrives on software based photo manipulation. He completed his education from Thakshila Central College, Horana. After doing his A/L he followed a Higher Diploma in Computer Science at Infortec International Nugegoda which layed the foundation of his passion for manipulating photos.
Kithmal’s yearning for creating something new and incomparable made him explore the techniques of photo manipulation on his own.
“Because of my interest in IT I was engaged in designing graphics and it further increased my passion for photo manipulation,” Kithmal explained.
Right after finishing his higher diploma Kithmal got the opportunity to hone his photography skills by working in a studio in Mahargama as a creative designer and retoucher.
“One day I want to open my own studio,” says Kithmal who already has a small studio at home. I hope to develop it further,” Kithmal voiced his future plans. Kithmal was able to master photo manipulation, his passion through working hard to enhance his IT knowledge and skills.
Though in other countries photo manipulation is highly recognised and used in many spheres including the film industry, Sri Lanka still lags behind. “In Sri Lanka photo manipulation is used only in the advertising field. Though it is difficult to bring photo manipulation to the fore in Sri Lanka we hope for the best,” said Kithmal.
Kithmal explained that, at times it is a challenge to create what is exactly in the mind’s eye, through manipulation. “The idea behind photo manipulation is to create something innovative.”
As a thriving photographer in the field Kithmal advises those who are new to photo manipulation, to always attempt to create new photos. Kithmal opined that a photo manipulator should be able to create something that supersedes a photographer. Kithmal can be reached via Face book on @Nipuna Kithmal.
