The Sri Lanka Cricket Board informed that Sri Lanka Cricket Captain Angelo Mathews would most probably not be participating in the first Champions Trophy cricket match against South Africa due to a calf injury. Therefore, Upul Tharanga would be captaining the team in the first match.

Previously, due to a foot injury sustained during the last 20 over, 20-20 tournament of the South African tour, Mathews was unable to participate in the tournament in Bangladesh and prior to this had to sit out of the Zimbabwe tour, due to an injury.

However after the healing of the injury and getting to the proper levels of physical fitness, he has this time around joined the tour to England for the Champions Trophy. Mathews who participated in the first practice match against Scotland scored an aggressive 95 runs from 106 balls in the practice match against Australia. He did not take part in the second match against New Zealand.

As a mid level pacie, Mathews’ absence will heavily affect the Sri Lankan side as he is the most essential batsman to strengthen the middle order. Attention is being paid to ensure that Matthews’ injury would heal within the next couple of days.
