The District of Jaffna is to be developed as a strategic city as part of a project funded by the World Bank, sources revealed.

The move comes in the wake of initiatives to develop the region and its infrastructure.
Accordingly, the Government has conducted several consultations stakeholders in the region, including the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) in this regard.

Minister of Megapolis and Western Development, Patali Champika Ranawaka too visited the area recently as part of the initial steps.

TNA MP, President’s Counsel MA Sumanthiran explained that cities within the District are to be picked out for development and in view of the proposed development activities, zoning is to be done within the Jaffna Town area. Certain zones will be earmarked for specific commercial activities.

“This is all part of the planned development of the city,” he added.
Earlier the government had also commenced steps to establish an international cricket stadium in the peninsula to boost tourism.
