Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit the Central Province during his two day visit to the country.
Modi’s visit to the hill country is of importance due to the high number of Tamils of Indian origin in the region.
The Tamils of Indian origin came to Sri Lanka during the early years of the 19th century to work in the local plantation sector.
Over the years, they had struggled to obtain Sri Lankan citizenship.
Even today, the hill country Tamils claim that they have been sidelined in various aspects of Sri Lanka’s progress.
This will be Modi’s second visit to the island nation after March 2015. He will arrive on May 12 and is expected to meet several key members of the government including President Maithripala Sirisena, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and Opposition Leader R. Sampanthan.
