May 01st marks the 24th death anniversary of Ranasinghe Premadasa, the third President of Sri Lanka. The architect of the Sucharitha Movement for socio-economic upliftment and spiritual development, he pursued the path of economic upliftment of the underprivileged. He is best remembered for the 200 garment factories programme, Gam Udawa, and the proposal to the United Nations (UN) to declare a year as the International Year of Shelter which was unanimously adopted at the 37th sessions of the UN and declared so for 1987. He was assassinated on 1993 May 01.
