Former Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa has called the government to re-start the stalled garbage management project which was funded by World Bank. Speaking on the solution to the garbage disposal issue, Rajapaksa stated that during the previous regime he had initiated a comprehensive plan which focused on waste management instead of dumping.
He said that a comprehensive feasibility study was conducted and the World Bank had agreed to fund the project for full implementation.

“The World Bank studied the matter and spent money on it. That is how we planned to take the garbage mountain in Colombo to Puttalam. We cannot just go and dump the garbage mountain in Puttalam. After conducting several rounds of discussions with the department of railways, it was decided that a rail track should be constructed in Meetotamulla,” he said.
