The Vijayabahu Motoross -2017 organized by Sri Lanka Army’s Vijayabahu Regiment and conducted by Sri Lanka Racing Riders Association will be held on April 2 at the Boyagane Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment racing tracks at 9.00am. The organizers expect a large number of competitors to participate in 14 events.

Regimental head and Base Commander of Kilinochchi Base Major General, Ajith Kariyakarawana addressing the media in Colombo said that registration for the events for this year’s meet which is the 15th edition of the series is still open and will close only on March 28. Major General Kariyakarawana also said that all proceeds will be used for the welfare of the families of soldiers who sacrificed their lives, and soldiers injured during the ethnic conflict in Sri Lanka.

In addition, the Regiment will spend some of the proceeds to help the school-going children of deceased soldiers while the Regiment also hopes to help the religious places of worship in the area and for social activities that will help the people in the area. The Chairman of the Vijayabahu Motocross Brig. Chandana Gunewardene said that the track was redeveloped to international standards giving the riders an opportunity to show their skills to the large number racing fans expected on this day.

The best rider in the open category at the meet will receive the Army Commander Lt. Gen. AWJC de Silva Trophy, while the champion rider of the meet will be awarded the Regiment Commander’s Trophy. In addition to these main awards, the winners and runners-up of all events receive trophies, certificates and cash awards. The organizers also have decided to give away cash awards to top five riders of every event. The winner of an event will receive 25,000 while the riders placed second and third will get 15,000, 10,000 respectively, and the riders finishing fourth and fifth get 5,000 each.

The organizers said that there are doubts over the participation of Indian riders as they have already informed that the National Championship in India to be held on the same day. However, they asserted that Japanese riders will be participating and will be a thrill for the crowds.

The top-notch riders in the calibre of Ishan Dassanayake, Shehan C. Adikari and Nihal Wijeratne will be seen in action. Gayan Sandaruwan who has won the Vijayabahu Motocross four times will be back on the track to give the youngster a big challenge.
