The  Kingswood- Dharmaraja  111th  ‘Battle of the Maroons’  ended in a draw on Saturday at the Pallekelle International  Stadium.    Both teams were eagerly awaiting a result but failed in their endeavour due to poor cricket.  Kingswood College coming into bat first ended their innings in a good position, thanks to the tail-enders for their stunning batting.   Kingswood College won the toss and elected to bat. Two captains, Avishika Chandrasiri and  Deshan Guansighe and the two coaches, Indika Fernando and Senaka Dissanayake, were introduced to the chief guest IGP Pujith Jayasundara. The happiest would have been two old boys who does a lot for sports, the oldest living Rajan  DM Dharmatilake   and  Kingswood’s   SMS  Samarakoon.

The   Rajan’s ‘bowling weapons’  troubled the  Kingswood College batsmen,  the bowlers looked penetrative  on  this  wicket,  and at lunch Kingswood lost  eight  wickets  for just 64 runs. The  Dharmaraja  bowlers Nivantha Hearth,  Navindu Dilshan and Gehan Vitharane   bowled spectacular spells to have the  Kingswood   batsmen at sea, it was a  shaky start  for the Kingwoodians.  With the score  92 for 9, the last pair Ranga Rathnayake and Vimukthi Wijaesiriwardene  stitched together an excellent  stand of 72 runs  , and took the  Kingwoodians  to   167and by tea, Kignswood were back in the dressing room   Vimukthi  has taken over 65 wicket this season.   He had nine hits to the rope and three over it, and he was well supported by   Ranga Ratnayake. So,  Kingswoodians ended  their innings  respectably. Dharmaraja College ended the day with 41 for 2 in response to  Kingswoodians 167. The  Rajans were  unlucky to  lose  their skipper Dehsan Guansinghe for no score.

Continuing from the overnight score of 41 for 2, Rajans ended their innings at 161, thanks Nivantha Hearth (40) and Dulaj Wijekoon(41). Kingswoodians taking the second turn went on to score 102 runs for one wicket,  Amial Jayaweera was unbeaten on 19  and  Yasod Kavinda gave an excellent display with the bat  to score 58 runs- four fours and four sixes, these two put on 102 opening stand and with the wicket of Kavinda the match came to an end.

Out of the 111 games played, Rajans have won 35 while Kingswood has 19 big match victories and the rest drawn. The Rajan’s  last win was in   2015  under Tharusha Weragoda and Kingswoodian’s last  win was in   1958 under C Maurice  Fernando. So, on first innings performance Dahrmarja College were awarded the T.B.Tenakoon memorial trophy.

Kingswood’s right arm off- spinner Gaindu Kaushalya   was successful   with the ball, taking 7 wickets.

Kingswoodians, taking the second turn, went on to score 102 runs for one wicket, Amial Jayaweera was unbeaten on 19 and Yasod Kavinda gave an excellent display with the bat to score 58 runs.

So, Dharmarja College were  awarded the TB Tennakoon Memorial Trophy by virtue of their 1st innings win.
