The Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) expressed views that the unofficial bar should be involved in relation to the nomination of names from the private bar for judicial positions in the process of the appointment of judges.

President of the BASL, Udaya Rohan De Silva however added that when suggesting names from the private bar for positions in the judiciary, it should be done by the president of the BASL following consultation with the Bar Council of the BASL.

“This is a crucial point as far as transparency is concerned”, he noted.

He explained that the Executive Committee of the BASL could initially discuss the matter prior to finally placing it before the Bar Council. RLJ
