The 2006 batch of St. Sylvester’s College   have come forward to organize the Inter-house boxing event after many years.  They have fixed it for Saturday (18). One of the finest boxers to come out of St. Sylvester’s is the former National Champion Nimal Lewke  who was well known in the rugger field, too,  will  grace as the chief guest. This school produced some of the finest boxers in the country. In the 1960s and 1970s, they were the king makers in  the Stubbs Shield inter-schools boxing  meet. Some of the top boxers   were selected to box for the Sri Lanka School Boxing Teams that took part in the dual competition with Indian Schools for the MD Gunasena Trophy during that era. At that time, it was   Derick Raymond who was a  Marshal at the University  of Peradeniya, was the coach  and he  produced  some top class  boxers who as school boys went on to win National Championship and even represented  the country in Commonwealth  and Olympics Games.

Some of his products are Elsworth Perera, P Edmond, Loyd Hope, Dias Sumanasekera, Danton Cooray, MR Abdeen, DC Weerasinghe, Derrick and the GAS Gunasinghe brothers, ACR Herathge, TS Hassen, M Riyal, the Jansz brothers, Milroy, Bernard, SA Aswar, D John, Eddie Premaratne, Nimal Lewke, etc, but the most popular product of this brilliant coach was the Bulner Brothers, Malcolm, Michael, Noel and Christopher. Noel and Malcolm were south paws; they were unbeaten in Sri Lanka. Both of them migrated to Australia and won the Australian National Champion. Malcolm Bulner as a schoolboy represented Sri Lanka at the Commonwealth Games and Olympic games in 1964 as a schoolboy.

So, it is a fine  tribute to a person who has done so much for boxing , so naming this  inter-house meet  is great of the 2006 batch boys  for organizing this meet   in memory of the late Boxing  coach  Derick Raymond.  The champion house will be awarded this trophy. This idea came from Nimal Lewke, the last National Champion coached by Derick Raymond. This  famous coach  migrated to Australia in early 70s and later to the UK. But the memories of this great man will be in the minds of the boxers who learnt from him. Derick was a very simple, methodical and goal-oriented coach who produced results. There will be following trophies presented at the meet. The Best Boxer, Malcolm Bulner Challenge Trophy, Derrick Gunasinghe Memorial Trophy for Junior Best Boxer, Nimal Lewke Challenge Trophy for the up and coming Boxer.
