The Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna confirmed that the constituent parties of the United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) with the exception of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) would be joining an alliance formed and led by the SLPP.
General Secretary of the SLPP, Attorney-at-Law Sagara Kariyawasam said that they would be making their major declaration when the next election (Local Government or Provincial Councils) would be announced by the Government.
The SLPP is planning on having their maiden Party conference before May.
He added that the recruitment drive for the Party’s general membership would be done during the month of March and are expecting a membership of over one million.
According to Kariyawasam, trade unions of the Party had been properly established and the Party was at present forming professional bodies and other affiliate bodies such as a lawyers association and an association of Buddhist monks.
“The Government is not declaring the Local Government election, which is undemocratic and harmful to the democratic process,” he explained while adding that the terms of three Provincial Councils would end by September this year.
“We are discussing and negotiating with all political parties except the United National Party (UNP) to form a very strong political alliance. All the parties of the UPFA, except for the SLFP will break away from the UPFA and join the alliance in which the SLPP will play the lead role,” he said.
We will never discuss with the UNP. We are against their fiscal policy. Our policy of protecting national assets is totally contrary to the UNP policy. We are discussing with other small parties,” Kariyawasam added.
