The Constitutional Council (CC) which met last evening under the chairmanship of Speaker Karu Jayasuriya has decided to appoint Supreme Court judge Priyasath Dep for the Chief Justice (CJ) post.

He will replace the current Chief Justice K. Sripavan who will retire from service today upon reaching the retirement age of 65.

President Maithripala Sirisena has submitted the names of SC justices Dep and K.T. Chithrasiri to the Constitutional Council for consideration and accordingly, the CC has selected justice Dep and informed the President.

Justice Dep who has served as the Solicitor General of Sri Lanka from 2007 to 2011 before being promoted as a SC Justice, will be the 45thCJ of the country.
