The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) declared their allegiance to the factions protesting against the setting up of the South Asian Institute of Technology and Medicine (SAITM) in a rally staged on Thursday (22).

The JVP has been silent on the issue during which the political backing for the campaign against SAITM was spearheaded by the Inter-University Students Federation affiliated to its breakaway faction and the Joint Opposition.

This is the first time they have taken to the streets in relation to the long running controversy. Seen here leading their first protest march in front of the Colombo Fort Railway Station.
