The first death anniversary of one of the most talented musicians of all time, Anton Jones, fell on the February 21, 2017. He was one of the best performers the Sri Lankan music industry ever produced and a man of talents seldom found in the field of arts. I doubt very much if the void left by the demise of an artiste of his caliber can ever be filled by anybody else.

Anton as a veteran artist not only entertained hundreds of thousands of fans with his deep melodious voice singing in his own exclusive style but was also a very simple down to earth man with unassuming qualities. Many of his songs became very popular among the folks of all walks.

Several hundred songs sung by him during his career of music are everlasting and extremely popular. His splendid voice captured generation after generation on picnics, parties and other musical events. This gigantic man was a key figure in Sri Lankan Baila and had several hits such as Mini Gawuma, Kanthoruwa, Uyala Pihala.  His musical career commenced in 1958 and he released nearly 40 cassettes some ten CDs. Most of his songs were focused on contemporary events.

This exemplary and extraordinarily simple man grew up on St. Sebastian’s Street in Hulftsdorp and began his music career under the guidance of Baila pioneer Wally Bastian in the early 1950s.
Let me join his music contemporaries, celebrity friends and army of fans in paying tribute to this wonderfully gifted, veteran singer.
