At the Trinity College prize giving which was held under the patronage of Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, a few days ago, saw one of the finest athletes in the schools scene Shenal Ratwatte being awarded the sportsman of the year award. A top class athlete Shenal was the champion athlete of the Junior School and was also the junior national athletics champion in 2016. He also won the under 20 x 200m final by clocking 21.73 seconds to set a new meet record ,erasing the record of 22.04 seconds set in 2016. He represented Sri Lanka at the 17th Asian Junior Athletics Championship in Vietnam in 2016.
He was the school athletics team vice captain in 2015 and was awarded the ‘Lion’ in 2016. He was the champion athlete in the under 20 age group in 2016. He became the first Rattwate to win the athletic Lion. Normally Ratwattes have won the Lion through their exploits at cricket, boxing and rugby. His grandfather Sydney Ratwatte was a triple ‘Lion’ in 1930’s and won the Boxing ‘Lion’ at the age of 14. He later won the ‘Lion’ at cricket and rugby. Shenal’s brother Shevan captained the school at baseball in 2013. Shenal’s father, Suresh, too, was a sportsman and is a well-known hotelier.
