Lady Gaga’s Superbowl performance
Lady Gaga performed at the Superbowl half time show – one of the most prestigious shows an artist can hope to perform at. With few costume changes and an electrifying set, Gaga was said to have kept things relatively low-key but pitch perfect. The actresses who performed as the Schuyler Sisters in the hit Broadway musical ‘Hamilton’ performed the song ‘America the Beautiful’, slipping in the word ‘and sisterhood’ to the line ‘And crown thy good with brotherhood from sea to shining sea’. The move met with many cheers from the audience in the stadium, and was eagerly shared online as well.


Sir John Hurt passes away
The veteran actor Sir John Hurt passed away at the age of 77. His most famous roles included one in The Elephant Man opposite Anthony Hopkins, Nineteen Eighty-Four, V for Vendetta, Merlin, and he was the War Doctor in the 50th anniversary episode of Doctor Who. Hurt was a beloved British actor who will be missed by many of his fans and fellow workers in the film industry.

Trailer alert

A handful of movie trailers were released as well – from ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 2’, ‘Logan’ which featured the song Amazing Grace, ‘Fast and the Furious 8’ and the new Pirates of the Caribbean movie that features an undead Will Turner. A series of advertisements were released as well, and many seemed to have a political undertone, with one website hosting an ad crashing with the amount of visitors who headed there to watch it.

Oscar nominations

The Oscar Nominations were announced and people online had a lot of opinions – both good and bad – about the prominent awards show. Some were bored by the sheer amount of nominations ‘La La Land’ received, saying that more important movies deserved nominations whereas others were happy that a musical was gaining mainstream success. Many African-American actors were nominated, which is positive after the controversy of the movement ‘Oscars So White’. ‘Manchester by the Sea’, ‘Moonlight’ and ‘Arrival’ scored many of the nominations. Even the superhero movie ‘Suicide Squad’ was nominated for makeup.

Vine shuts down

The social media platform Vine was finally shut down by Twitter. Unlike Snapchat or Instagram, the app was more akin to YouTube in that it encouraged experimentation. Social media users started collecting their favourite vine compilations and posting them online and many of the videos were circulating online. Twitter has introduced another app ‘Vine Camera’ which is essentially the same as Vine but without the social media aspect, and people aren’t too happy.

Beyoncé announce pregnancy

Beyoncé announced her pregnancy with an underwater photoshoot and an image that many people declared to soon be iconic, of her with a veil over her head and a floral background. The news was talked about so much that it was soon trending across social media platforms, especially because she announced that she was having twins. She has been nominated for nine 2017 Grammy Awards.
