Elections monitoring bodies have called for issues in the relevant law with regard to the Local Government election.

Polls monitor, People’s Action for Free and Fair Elections explained that the Delimitation Committee report along with the electorates and seats and the number of Local Government members should along with the 56 technical issues that have been mentioned be gazetted simultaneously.

Executive Director of PAFFREL, Rohana Hettiarachchi said that amendments should be brought after discussions held in this regard only subsequent to the election being held.

Problems in the relevant Act include the deposit of candidates being set at Rs 20,000 when it should be between Rs 2,000 and Rs 5,000, the credit limits of public servants and the absence of a system to address the grievances of the best losers.
Campaign finance too is not yet included in the law.

“If one seeks to solve all, the election cannot be held,” he noted.
