The amendments to all the Standing Orders of Parliament have been finalized and are scheduled to be tabled following the obtaining of the views of MPs in this regard.

Deputy Speaker, Thilanga Sumathipala recently stated that the Standing Orders of Parliament had to be changed and updated according to present day requirements for the purpose of facilitating the administration of Parliamentary affairs as they had not been changed for 30 years and were therefore archaic.   A workshop is to be held in this view for MPs next week to discuss the matter.

Explaining that the entire system of Standing Orders would be redone, Deputy Secretary General of Parliament, Neil Iddawela said that the new amendments would include additions such as new Sectoral oversights committees and new committees.
“These would be adopted by Parliament soon”, he further said while noting that the amendments would be tabled in Parliament soon as per procedure.
