Government has decided to amend the Firearms Ordinance which was drafted over a hundred years ago.

The Ordinance which was first passed in 1916 will be amended to suit the present needs including the use of firearms in keeping the law and order of the country. Firearms licenses at present are issued for several reasons; such as protection of agricultural cultivations and other properties other than defence related matters.

This was revealed by Co-Cabinet Spokesman and Health Minister Dr. Rajitha Senaratne at the weekly Cabinet press briefing.

He also said that the proposal was brought by President Maithripala Sirisena in his capacity as the Minister of Defence and was approved by the Cabinet of Ministers.

A committee of officials has already been appointed for the purpose and the legal draftsman will be instructed to draft the legislations to amend the ordinance.
