The 45-tonner at Galle Face Green uses an estimated 30 tons of iron piping and over 2,500 metres of mesh. The tree topper will be a 20-foot-tall star, weighing approximately 60 kilogrammes. An estimated one million red, gold, blue and silver hand-painted pine cones and 800,000 LED lights will adorn the tree.

Work on what is to be the world’s largest Christmas tree was halted when archbishop of Colombo, Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith critisized the project as ‘wasteful expenditure’. The project was given the green light again after Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and Finance Minister Ravi Karunanayake saw Cardinal Ranjith on December 11
