The Richmond College Union Colombo is to celebrate its centenary in grand fashion on December 16 at the Hilton Colombo.
The event would see the participation of Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, who would be the Chief Guest, among others.
The RCU Colombo has a rich and proud history like the school itself. Existence for hundred years is a unique phenomena of any entity.
The RCU Colombo has evolved to be a dynamic association of old boys of Richmond based in Colombo. The union, through its many contributions to the school, and to the society, throughout the past and present, It has now become an integral partner of Richmond College.
The Year 1916 became significant as it records the birth of this association, which was then called “Richmond College Old boys Association (RCOBA) Colombo Branch”. The inaugural meeting of the RCOBA Colombo branch was held at the “Harvard Settlement” in Colombo on Dec 11, 1916 with Rev W.J.T. Small, the then Principal presiding.
The first elected President of RCOBA Colombo branch was C.L. Wickramasinghe, who is the grandfather of the present Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe.
The school boasts of several prominent personalities who have brought pride to the nation over the years. The impressive list includes Dr CWW Kannangara, Dr W. Dahanayake, P.de S. Kularatne, M.W.H. De Silva, R.A.de Mel (First Mayor of Colombo M.C.) Norman Waidyaratne (Former Deputy Speaker ) to name a few.
During the 1980s the name of the union was changed to “Richmond College Union Colombo”(RCU Colombo), by amalgamating the then old Richmondites Sports Club and RCOBA Colombo branch.
Over the last three decades the RCU Colombo with a membership of over 900 has been transformed into a strong group, supporting the college in many areas including academic activity, sports, transport, infrastructure development and through management of endowment funds.
The union membership is likely to increase to 1000 during its centenary celebration.
“In this Centenary year we can look back with pride and satisfaction of the services rendered by this Union,” a statement by the union said.
Under the abled leadership of the incumbent President of the union, Vipul Hettige, many Programmes have been organised to celebrate this historical milestone.
The “Centenary Scholarship Scheme” with Rs 5 million initial capital will be launched on 16th Dec 2016, on which day the final banquet will be held with the participation of Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe as the Chief Guest.
“What we are trying to do is to give back something to the school. It is our duty to do so,” Hettige said.
Arrangements have also been made to issue a commemorative Postal Stamp to mark this occasion.
