In line with the government’s vision to attract two million tourists by the end of 2016, Sri Lanka tourism is planning two major events in Colombo to celebrate the festive season.
The Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau under the patronage of the Ministry of Tourism Development will be spearheading agreements for these events scheduled to be held at two separate locations, namely, Green Path and Independence Arcade from December 20th to 24th in collaboration with the private sector.
Tourism Fest 2016 will take place at the Independence Arcade in Colombo and will be declared open by Prime Minister Ranil Wickremasinghe and Minister of Tourism Development, Christian Religious Affairs and Lands, John Amaratunga on December 20th. The event’s closing ceremony on the 23rd is expected to be attended by President, Maithreepala Sirisena.
Meanwhile the inaugural Colombo Christmas Street is set to take place from December 22nd to the 24th at Green Path offering a novel concept of entertainment to locals and foreigners alike. The event will be organized by the Sri Lanka Retailers’ Association in collaboration with the tourism ministry and the Colombo Municipal Council.
Speaking to the media last week, Minister of Tourism Development and Christian Religious Affairs, John Amaratunga said that this event was organized with a view to establishing Sri Lanka as the ultimate holiday destination in the Asian region. He commended the corporate community and the private sector for coming forward and extending their fullest support to the public sector in organizing this event.
