St. Joseph’s College wins boys’ title

Digampitiya Maha Vidyalaya, Kurunegala made history when they emerged champions in the girls’ category in the ‘Samaposha Under-15 Inter-Schools Football Championship.
Entering the tournament for the first time, Digampitiya MV beat last year’s winners Mahajana College, Jaffna 1-nil in the final played at the Sir Albert F. Peiris Stadium,
Wennapuwa recently.

The best player of the tournament was Nayani Thamasha Jayabandu and the best goalkeeper was Peshani Dilhara Jayasinghe, both of Digampitiya MV.

St. Joseph’s College, Maradana emerged champions in the Boys’ category defeating rivals Al Aqsha College, Kinniya 2-nil in the final.

St. Sebastian College, Katuneriya emerged as second runners-up.

Shenal Sandeepa grabbed the trophy for the best player of the tournament while Mathish Perera won the best goalkeeper’s title and they are both from St. Joseph’s College.

Sponsored for the 8th consecutive year by Samaposha, the leading nutrition brand of Plenty Foods (Pvt) Ltd., and organised by the Sri Lanka School Football Association (SLSFA) in collaboration with the Football Federation of Sri Lanka (FFSL).

The tournament kicked off on 14th September with the passionate participation of 510 schools island wide totalling over 10,000 students.

Sharing his thoughts on the tournament, N.S.B. Dissanayake, Secretary General –SLSFA said “I’m proud to witness a great deal of camaraderie throughout this tournament. We were awed by the talents and the enthusiasm of these players. My heartfelt gratitude goes to Samaposha for stepping in as the sole sponsor of this tournament over the past eight years. With the backing of a conglomerate like CBL we have the opportunity to identify the talented Sri Lankan players and lead them up the ladder.”
